Revision 2
Dec 20, 2010

1. Scope

This specification applies to District Material ID 1000179 for stake mounted sign assemblies as illustrated.

2. Material and Tag Requirements

Refer to District Material Standard TAGMAT1.

3. Size

Sign shall be 4" wide x 30" high with a tolerance of +/- 1/16". Placement of the text, letter size, and line spacing shall be as shown in the illustration. Letters shall be 1-3/4" high. The Douglas fir stake to which the sign is affixed shall have nominal dimensions of 1" x 2" x 60" and minimum dimensions of 3/4" x 1-1/2" x 59".

4. Color

Front of sign shall have a Fire Red (Pantone 185C) or Safety Red (per ANSI 535.1, Safety Color Code) background with white reversed out copy. Back of sign may be white, Fire Red, or Safety Red.

5. Stake Material

Stakes shall be made from 1" thick kiln or air-dried select merchantable Douglas fir boards surfaced on two sides in accordance with the West Coast Lumber Inspection Bureau, Standard Grading and Dressing Rules for Douglas Fir, West Coast Hemlock, Sitka Spruce, White Fir, and Western Red Cedar.

6. Method of Sign Attachment

Signs shall be attached to stakes in three places as illustrated. Attachment shall be made with 3/4" No. 6 wood screws or with staples (designed for use in wood) having a leg length of 3/4". Signs shall remain securely affixed to the stakes while being hammered into the ground after a minimum of 12 months of 68 degree indoor storage.
(Note: The District wants to avoid a repeat of a past problem wherein, after a lengthy period of storage, wood shrinkage caused small staples to loosen and the signs to fall off when the stakes were hammered into the ground.)

7. Special Packaging Instructions

Sign assemblies shall be neatly bundled in sets of 25 per bundle.
Bundles shall be strapped securely to nonreturnable wooden pallets suitable for handling with a forklift. Care shall be taken to ensure strapping material does not damage sign assemblies. Each pallet load shall be labeled or tagged with the manufacturer's name or logo and the date of production.
