1. Scope
This specification applies to rectangular shaped steel handhole covers with a non-skid surface. The cover shall be free of any sharp edges, burrs, or other deformations for handling and public safety.
2. Application
These handhole covers shall be suitable for outdoor use where occasional light weight vehicular traffic has occurred. These covers will be bolted down over existing handhole covers at underground handhole locations to strengthen and protect against damage and breakage.
3. Security
The handhole cover shall be designed for securing to a handhole with two or four (depending on handhole style) 3/8”-16UNC stainless steel penta-head bolts.
4. Identification
The cover shall be neatly embossed with the word POWER or ELECTRIC as illustrated above. Letters shall be a minimum of 2” and a maximum of 3” in height.
5. Size
The overall dimension of the cover shall be 16” wide x 28” long. The cover shall have rounded corners with a 1” radius. There shall be six 3/4” holes in this cover spaced as shown in the figure above. Holes shall be drilled prior to hot dipped galvanizing process.
6. Material
The cover shall be made of flat 1/4” diamond plate mild steel meeting the requirements of ASTM A 36 or equivalent. The cover shall be hot dipped galvanized in accordance with ASTM A 653.
