Notes:

  1. Straw wattles are temporary erosion and sediment control barriers consisting of straw that is wrapped in biodegradable plastic netting. Wattles reduce the velocity and can spread the flow of rill (rivulet) and sheet runoff, and can capture and retain sediment. Wattles are placed in shallow trenches and staked along the contour of disturbed or newly constructed slopes. See T&D Guideline 4-18-5.1 BMP for Use of Straw Wattles for conditions of their use, design criteria, maintenance and construction details.
  2. Erosion control blankets are intended to prevent erosion and hold seed and mulch in place on steep slopes and in channels so that vegetation can become well established. In addition, some blankets can be used to permanently reinforce turf to protect drainage ways during high flows. Blankets are strands of material that are not tightly woven, but instead form a layer of interlocking fibers, typically held together by a biodegradable or photodegradable netting (for example, excelsior or straw blankets).
See T&D Guideline 4-18-5.2 BMP for Use of Jute Blankets for conditions of their use, design criteria, maintenance and construction details.
