Notes:

  1. Cedar mulch, straw bales and sand bags are for use in erosion and sedimentation control as needed.
  2. Cedar mulch is intended as an erosion control alternative to straw in situations where straw isn’t appropriate, e.g., residential front yards. Applications will be for those situations where only small amounts of mulch are required, hence the 2 cu ft bag size.
  3. When cedar mulch is used to prevent erosion, apply a 2" - 3" thick layer to disturbed areas. The number of 2 cu ft bags needed are: 2" depth - 1 bag per 12 sq ft and 3" depth - 1 bag per 6 sq ft.
  4. To prevent erosion, apply a 2" - 3" thick layer of straw to disturbed areas. Area may be hand sown with grass seed beforehand or hydro seeded at a later date following straw removal. To achieve appropriate thickness, apply straw at the rate of 2-3 tons per acre or 1.25 – 2 bales per 1000 sq ft (based on a 72 lb bale).
  5. Hay hooks (MID 1000874) are available from District warehouses to aid in handling straw bales.
  6. In addition to their uses for erosion and sedimentation control, sand bags may be used for such applications as holding material in place during backfilling, e.g., lightweight composite vaults and handholes.
  7. When using sand bags for building walls, fill one-half full, tie off near top of bag, fold top of bag down and rest bag on folded top.
