- These brackets are intended for use on overhead transformers to support the weight of heavy secondary lead wires, typically copper lead wires sizes 350 kcmil and larger. By supporting the weight of the lead wires the vertical load on the secondary bushings is reduced thereby reducing the likelihood of oil leaks. The bracket is designed for mounting on the lower lip of a transformer tank as illustrated above.
- Each overhead transformer compatible unit which specifies copper secondary leads of 350 kcmil or larger contains a secondary lead wire support bracket. Consequently, it is generally unnecessary to specify a bracket for new transformer installations. The primary need for specifying brackets will be to replace units that are broken or missing.
- A single bracket should be adequate for 1∅ overhead transformer installations and 3∅ overhead cluster mount transformer banks which have secondary lead wire sizes as indicated above. Because the District trains the secondary lead wires into a pitchfork configuration on the center transformer on 3∅ banks, only one support bracket is generally needed for an entire bank.
- Refer to T&D Guideline 4-13-11.1 for secondary lead wire sizes for various transformer banks.
